Rwanda on Friday,in Kigali launched its first vaccine campaign thus becoming the first in Africa to use the Pfizer BioNTech Covid-19 vaccines.
Rwanda was one of the countries chosen for the vaccines following the country’s capacity to store the vaccine at an ulta cold freezer between 80 °c and 60 °c
Authorities began transporting Pfizer and AstraZeneca shots round the nation after they arrived earler this week using helicopters to reach remote areas.
President Paul Kagame plans to vaccinate at least 30 per cent of the population with health workers and elderly prioritized as first in line.
Rwanda has so far received 102,960 and 240,000 doses of Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines respectively through the COVAX facility.
Health Minister, Daniel Ngamije shortly after receiving his shot said” the turnout is good and said the doses had been distributed to over 500 health facilities across the country.
Rwanda with a population of 12 million people is one of the countries with low covid cases and fatalities.
The country reported just more than 19,000 cases and 265 deaths.
