The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation NNPC has said it would collaborate with other stakeholders to address the problem of power supply in Borno.
The Group Managing Director of NNPC, Malam Mele Kyari disclosed this on Friday in Maiduguri during a courtesy call on Gov.Babagana Zulum.
Kyari said establishment of a dedicated gas plant in Maiduguri was possible and would” serve the current needs and potentially supply power to other neighbouring cities and even countries.”
He said between three to four months, a gas plant that should serve Borno would be established.
” We are seeing a very short while frame, between three to four months,we should be able to put up a power plant that will serve Borno”. he said
The GMD noted that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration had declared this decade,a decade of gas, meaning that within the next 10 years there would be significant gas entry into the domestic market adding that they would work with the Borno government and other stakeholders to ensure the establishment of the gas plant.
Responding, Zulum commended the NNPC for the intervention saying it would change the narrative in the state as power is very essential in reducing the magnitude of poverty caused by insurgency in the state.
He noted that the NNPC and its subsidiaries had on several occasions rendered humanitarian support to the state among others, is the 250 bed capacity infectious disease hospital.
Zulum who assured support of the programme entitled” Maiduguri and Environs Emergency Power Stabilisation and Improvement Project” said the Yola Electricity Distribution Company has the infrastructure to link up with the gas plant when completed and supply power to the people.
Maiduguri and its environs have been cut off from the National grid for months due to activities of insurgents.
