Nigerian Defence Headquarters has debunked speculations of imminent retirement of some Generals following the appointment of Major General Farouk Yahaya as Chief of Staff.
Brigadier General Bernard Onyeuko,Acting Director, Defence Media Operations made this known to newsmen on Thursday in Abuja
He said the rumours were unfounded as retirement was only on voluntary basis for senior officers who wished to do so adding that so far, no retirement had been authorised by the military high command .
Speculations over mass retirement of Senior personnel in the Army trailed the appointment of Majjor General Yahaya as new COAS following the death of Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru in a plane crash on Friday, May 21 ,2021 in Kaduna.
The rumour mill had it that it was the tradition of the military to retire senior officers soon after surbodinates were appointed.
The late COAS was a member of the regular course 35 of the Nigerian Defence Academy while his successor,Yahaya was his junior being in course 37 in same academy.
Going by the millers, all Generals who were members of course 35 and 36 were marked for immediate retirement as they would not be expected to take directives from their junior
However, the growth of Insecurity in the country and the strength of the military would determine the direction of the army .
