Micro- blogging social media channel, Twitter has succumbed to the demand by the Nigerian Government to open office in Nigeria.
This was one of the conditions given to the medium to lift its suspension in the country.
Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed made the disclosure while briefing State House Correspondents at the end of the Federal Executive Council FEC meeting on Wednesday chaired by the Vice President, Prof.Yemi Osinbajo at the presidential villa.
Mohammed who explained that the federal government’s engagement with Twitter had been very successful expressed optimism for an end in sight of the resolution.
He said” “We appreciate the patience of Nigerians. I want to assure you that we have made very tremendous progress. We have met with Twitter both physically and in writing. We are actually almost there.
The Minister said “Twitter has shown a lot of flexibility” in its conversation with the federal government adding that although there were still a few areas yet to reach agreement, Twitter has agreed to open office in 2022.
The ban on Twitter on Friday June 4,2021, generated hue and cry from users in and outside the country
The Federal Government suspended Twitter after Twitter deleted Buhari’s Tweet on Civil War for violating the rules.
Buhari had in reference to the huge impact of the war ,tweeted to treat” those misbehaving today in the language they will understand”
The President’s tweet followed unending destruction of lives and public facilities in the South East Region by Biafra nation agitators.
